Background information about 'Sublunary Tragedies'
Before Tamás Kátai's Thy Catafalque became the genre-defying, avant-garde shapeshifter we know today, there was Sublunary Tragedies — the raw, blackened foundation upon which everything was built. Originally released in 1999, this debut album captures a band still steeped in the frostbitten atmospheres of second-wave black metal, yet already hinting at the restless creativity that would later define their sound. The album moves through a cold, desolate landscape of tremolo-picked guitars, haunting synth textures, and Kátai's distinctive rasp, which alternates between desperate shrieks and clean, melancholic passages. Tracks like “Erdgeist” and “Ashesdance” are pure, unfiltered black metal fury, while “Come Late Autumn Rains” introduces a more atmospheric, almost folk-tinged melancholy that would become a signature element in later works. The production is raw but not muddy, giving the album a timeless, organic feel that suits its themes of nature, loss, and existential dread. This is not the polished, experimental beast of later albums like Róka Hasa Rádió — this is Thy Catafalque in its primal form, hungry, cold, and utterly captivating. A must-have for anyone tracing the evolution of one of Hungary's most unique musical minds.
