Background information about 'Dragons Of The North'
"Dragons Of The North" is the debut album from Norway's Einherjer, and it hits like a frostbitten hammer to the chest. Released during the mid-90s wave when Scandinavian metal was carving its own mythology, this record takes the raw aggression of black metal and wraps it in the epic storytelling of Viking lore. The title track opens with a galloping riff that feels like a war march across frozen fjords, while Einherjer balance blistering speed with surprisingly melodic passages that show real songwriting maturity for a debut.
The album shifts effortlessly between ferocious blast-beat fury on tracks like "Fimbul Winter" and "Storms Of The Elder" to the more measured, almost folk-inflected atmosphere of "Slaget Ved Hafrsfjord" — a nod to their Norwegian heritage that gives the record its authentic soul. The production is raw enough to keep the underground credibility intact, yet clear enough that every tremolo-picked riff and thunderous drum fill lands with precision. "Ballad Of The Swords" closes things out with a haunting, slower tempo that proves these guys weren't just about speed — they understood mood and dynamics too.
What really sets "Dragons Of The North" apart is how it captures a specific moment in time: when Viking metal was defining itself as more than just a lyrical theme, but as a full aesthetic and sonic identity. Einherjer were pioneers in that regard, and this album stands as a vital document of that era.
