Background information about 'Helios'
There are albums that merely soundtrack your existence, and then there are those that dare to rearrange your DNA. Firtan's Helios is firmly in the latter camp. Named after the sun itself – not the gentle, life-giving star of a summer's day, but the scorching, merciless eye of an unforgiving cosmos – this record charts a brutal path toward enlightenment. Not as escape, but as conquest. It's about becoming the strongest, clearest version of yourself in a world engineered for distraction and decay.
Musically, Helios is a masterclass in controlled chaos. The German blackgaze veterans fuse the raw, atmospheric ferocity of black metal with the crushing weight of death metal, creating a sound that mirrors the album's core theme: clarity forged through struggle. What truly sets this album apart, though, is the evocative presence of acoustic and electric violin weaving through the compositions. These melancholic and experimental tones create tension and complexity, enhancing the band's intricate riffing and unexpected shifts. Throw in ritualistic chants, acoustic instruments, and analogue synthesizers, and you've got layers upon layers of depth that demand repeated listens.
