Haken have never been a band content to sit still, and with Fauna they've outdone themselves once again. Where their previous records leaned into grand, conceptual storytelling, this one feels more like a collection of living, breathing creatures — each track its own animal with its own pulse, its own temperament, and its own way of sinking its teeth into you.

The album opens with the thunderous stomp of Taurus, a riff-driven beast that immediately grabs you by the collar. From there, the band swings wildly between moods: the shimmering, almost jazz-flecked elegance of Nightingale, the glitchy, electronic textures woven through The Alphabet of Me, and the towering, emotionally devastating sweep of Sempiternal Beings. Ross Jennings has never sounded more versatile, shifting from a tender croon to a full-throated roar without ever losing the melody. The rhythm section of Conner Green and Ray Hearne is simply monstrous, locking into grooves that feel both impossibly technical and effortlessly natural.

What makes Fauna so special is the way it balances complexity with pure, undeniable hooks. Lovebite is a masterclass in restraint, while Elephants Never Forget builds into one of the most satisfying crescendos the band has ever written. By the time the gorgeous, melancholic Eyes of Ebony fades out, you'll want to start the whole journey over again. This is progressive metal at its most adventurous, most melodic, and most alive.
