Haken have never been a band content to stand still, and Fauna finds them at the absolute peak of their powers. This is progressive metal that refuses to be boxed in, swinging from crushing, djent-adjacent heaviness to shimmering, almost pop-leaning melodies without ever losing the thread. The opening salvo of "Taurus" and "Nightingale" is pure statement-of-intent material, full of the off-kilter time signatures and labyrinthine arrangements that have long been their calling card, yet there is a newfound warmth and immediacy here that makes even the densest passages feel welcoming.

What truly sets Fauna apart is its conceptual heart. The album uses the animal kingdom as a mirror for human behavior, each track a study of a different creature and the traits we share with it. "The Alphabet of Me" is a masterclass in tension and release, while "Sempiternal Beings" and "Beneath the White Rainbow" showcase the band's uncanny ability to make the complex sound effortless. Ross Jennings' vocals have never been more versatile, gliding from hushed intimacy to soaring, arena-sized choruses. The rhythm section of Conner Green and Raymond Hearne is locked in with a telepathic groove, and Richard Henshall's guitar work is simply stunning throughout. "Elephants Never Forget" and "Eyes of Ebony" close the album with an emotional weight that lingers long after the final note fades.
