British progressive alternative metal pioneers Haken are back, and it feels like a jolt of electricity straight to the chest. "In a Fever Dream" is their first new material since the universally praised Fauna from 2023, and from the very first note it's clear this isn't just a stopgap — it's the sound of a band hungry to push forward again.

Produced alongside George Lever (Loathe, Sleep Token), the EP strips back some of the conceptual sprawl and delivers five of the most emotionally direct, gut-punching pieces Haken have ever written. There's still all the labyrinthine riffing and jaw-dropping musicianship you'd expect, but it's wrapped in something rawer, more immediate. The title track "In a Fever Dream" opens things up with a sprawling seven-minute statement, while "Delirium" and "Eclipsed by You" balance heaviness with the kind of soaring melody that gets under your skin. Side B's "Bleeding Sky" and the gorgeous closer "Lotus" round out a release that feels both urgent and deeply considered.

Adding serious firepower are two of the most respected bassists in the game: Adam "Nolly" Getgood (Periphery) and Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats, Joe Satriani) split bass duties across the five tracks, and their fingerprints are all over the low-end groove. The striking cover art from Vaxo Lang ties the whole fever-dream aesthetic together beautifully.
