France's black metal underground has always bred some of the most vile, unhinged creatures the genre has ever seen, and Hell Militia stand tall among the filthiest. Their debut full-length Canonisation Of The Foul Spirit, originally unleashed in 2005, is a record that reeks of pure, unfiltered contempt. This isn't polished, trendy black metal — this is a fucking ritual of desecration.

The band, featuring members from MÜTIILATION, ARKHON INFAUSTUS and TEMPLE OF BAAL, came crashing onto the scene with nothing but a demo and a split 7-inch behind them. Yet the ten tracks here — each labeled a "Psalm" — show a level of songwriting maturity that's frankly unsettling. The production is raw enough to keep its claws out but clear enough to let every twisted riff and blast beat land with precision. And then there's Meyhnach's vocal performance. His demented, utterly unhinged delivery on tracks like "Burning Human Pigs", "Prophecy From The Mutilated Children" and "Black Fucking Cancer" is nothing short of iconic. He doesn't just sing — he spews bile, preaches a false gospel from the depths of madness. This is black metal that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until the final chord of "Years Ago" fades into the abyss. A cornerstone of French black metal filth.
