There are albums that creep up on you, and then there are albums that kick the door down, piss on the altar, and laugh while doing it. Hell Militia's debut full-length Canonisation Of The Foul Spirit is definitely the latter. Dropped in 2005, this record served as the french scene's middle finger to anything remotely sacred, and it still sounds as vile and unhinged today as it did back then.
Assembled from the rotten guts of MÜTIILATION, ARKHON INFAUSTUS and TEMPLE OF BAAL, this is black metal played by people who've been marinating in the underground's filth for years — and it shows. The production hits that sweet spot: raw enough to keep the grime, clear enough to let every twisted riff and blast beat land like a hammer. Meyhnach from MÜTIILATION delivers vocals that sound less like singing and more like a man being exorcised in reverse — especially on tracks like "Burning Human Pigs" and "Black Fucking Cancer." The riffs draw from the same well as the members' other projects, but there's a distinct, almost ritualistic structure to the 10 "Psalms" that makes this stand on its own. This isn't polished, this isn't pretty — this is black metal that still smells like the corpse paint and the basement it was born in.
