Background information about 'The Northern Upir's Death'
Immortal's "The Northern Upir's Death" stands as a fascinating archaeological dig into the primordial chaos that birthed one of black metal's most legendary forces. This compilation resurrects the band's earliest incarnation from 1991, when they still prowled the shadowy borderlands between death and black metal, delivering a sound that was raw, uncompromising, and utterly ferocious. The self-titled demo showcases Immortal in their most primitive form – think grinding death metal riffs wrapped in an atmosphere so cold it could freeze hellfire itself.
What makes this release absolutely essential is how it captures lightning in a bottle. The infamous self-titled EP from '91 sits alongside two rehearsal tracks from '92, all carefully remastered by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony. These aren't just historical curiosities – they're blazing testaments to the unfiltered aggression that would eventually evolve into the frost-bitten majesty we know today. Every track crackles with an energy that feels genuinely dangerous, like stumbling upon an ancient ritual in the Norwegian wilderness.
