Background information about 'Damned in Black'

When the millennium turned, the frozen kings of Blashyrkh were in the midst of a monumental transformation. Damned in Black, released in the year 2000, captures Immortal at a pivotal crossroads — the epic, sprawling majesty of At the Heart of Winter still echoing through the halls, but now injected with a renewed ferocity that harkens back to their most blistering days. This is the sound of a band who had mastered the art of the grand, sweeping black metal anthem and decided to see just how hard they could push it. The addition of bassist Iscariah brought a fresh dynamic to the fold, and you can feel that new blood coursing through every single track here. From the opening barrage, it's clear: Immortal aren't just walking through the frozen wastes anymore, they're charging across them at full speed.

What makes Damned in Black so utterly essential is the way it balances sheer velocity with that unmistakable Immortal grandeur. The riffs are razor-sharp, the drumming is an avalanche of blastbeats and thunderous double-kick, yet there's always room for those glorious, fist-pumping moments of triumph that only Abbath and Demonaz could conjure. And then there's the closing title track — good lord, the closing title track. If you've ever wanted to know what "epic" truly means in the context of black metal, Damned in Black is the definition. It's a sprawling, majestic beast of a song that builds and crashes and soars in ways that leave you breathless. This is Immortal at their most confident, their most battle-hardened, and honestly, some of the finest Norwegian black metal ever committed to tape.
