Some records just demand to be heard, and this is one of them. Impending Doom from Thuringia, Germany, were never your run-of-the-mill black metal act. Formed back in 1993 under a different name and solidifying as IMPENDING DOOM by 1995, this band carved out a unique space with their blend of melody, aggression, and atmospheric heft. Their debut full-length, Caedes Sacrilegae, originally dropped in 1997, clocking in at nearly an hour of ambitious, genre-defying metal. Now, almost three decades later, Darkness Shall Rise Productions have done the damn thing right.

The story behind this album is almost as compelling as the music itself. Due to unfortunate circumstances during the original recording sessions, the sound of Caedes Sacrilegae was always compromised — a shadow of what the band intended. Enter the Rough Mixes. Remastered and restored by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony in March 2026, this version finally sounds like the album the band always heard in their heads. It's rawer, punchier, and breathes with a life the original mix never quite captured.

Musically, this thing is a beast. It's built on four reimaginings of older material from the band's pre-Impending Doom days (Messias Abaddon and Pagan Fires), while the remaining tracks were fresh compositions that showcased the band at their most melodically adventurous. The moody keyboards — think early Cradle of Filth or Gehenna — weave through the riffs without ever softening the blow. Make no mistake: this is still a heavy metal record with serious edge. The title track Caedes Sacrilegae opens with a theatrical dread that sets the tone, while tracks like Aeon of Dreams and Funeral Pile - My Throne of Fire ride the line between epic grandeur and raw aggression. Hellhammer - Outtake and a cover of Dethroned Emperor round things off with a nod to the band's influences. Packed with unseen photos and a fresh interview with all members, this is the definitive edition of a cult classic finally getting its due.
