Arcturus' "Constellation / My Angel" is a monumental release in the evolution of Norwegian black metal. Emerging from the remnants of death metal band Mortem, Arcturus found their unique voice with their early EP "My Angel." This release marked the beginning of their journey into the avant-garde, setting a precedent for their eclectic blend of black metal with atmospheric elements. The record's darkly ethereal compositions are driven by haunting keyboard arrangements from Sverd and thunderous percussion from Hellhammer. The vocals transition from Marius Vold's initial contributions to those of Garm from Ulver, weaving a tapestry of sound that is both chilling and transcendent. On "Constellation," Arcturus expanded their sonic palette further with Samoth from Emperor contributing guitar work that added depth and dimension to the tracks. The theatrical flair that Sverd's keys brought to these compositions foreshadowed the band's later, more operatic endeavors. This LP encapsulates a transformative period in their discography—one that gestures toward the broader horizons they would explore in subsequent releases.
