Emerging from the ashes of Norwegian death metal band MORTEM, ARCTURUS officially declared their presence in Oslo's burgeoning black metal scene with the release of the two-track 7" "My Angel" in 1991. Featuring Sverd on keyboards and MAYHEM's Hellhammer on drums, the band distinguished itself early with doom-laden slowness and eerie keyboard layers. By the time they released the "Constellation" EP in 1994, ULVER's Garm had taken over vocals, and EMPEROR's Samoth joined on guitar. The EP deviated from traditional black metal norms, hinting at a theatrical style ARCTURUS would adopt on subsequent releases.
