Background information about 'Puritan Masochism'
Puritan Masochism is the sound of a basement in Copenhagen deciding it has had enough and starting to scream. Konvent deal in a kind of doom that is not romantic about its own suffering — it is slow, dirty and absolutely certain of itself. The riffs come down like wet concrete, the tempo refuses to hurry, and somewhere underneath it all there is a voice that sounds less sung than excavated. It is heavy in the oldest sense of the word: weight, not volume for its own sake.
What makes this record stick is the patience. Nothing here is in a rush to get to the payoff, and when it arrives, it arrives as a collapse rather than a chorus. The low end is enormous, the guitars are tuned somewhere near the floor, and the whole thing has that wonderful, slightly wrong feeling of a band playing for themselves first and the audience second. Death metal bones, doom pacing, a genuine sense of dread — and, crucially, hooks buried deep enough that you keep digging for them.
