LEGIONS OF DOOM · The Skull 3 | GREEN HAZE LP

Background information about 'The Skull 3'

There is a heavy, mournful weight to The Skull 3, a debut that feels less like a beginning and more like a resurrection. Legions of Doom steps into the spotlight not as a replacement for the legendary Eric Wagner’s The Skull, but as a vibrant continuation of his musical spirit. With Wagner having passed in 2021, this record serves as both a tribute and a bold new chapter. Guitarist Lothar Keller and bassist Ron Holzner, both veterans of Trouble, have taken material intended for The Skull’s third album and reimagined it with a fresh lineup. Drummer Henry Vasquez (Saint Vitus, Blood of the Sun) provides a thunderous backbone, while vocalists Karl Agell and Scott Reagers bring distinct, powerful voices to the forefront. Agell’s gritty intensity and Reagers’ raw, classic doom wail create a dynamic interplay that keeps the music moving forward rather than stagnating in nostalgia.

The album is a masterclass in slow-burning, heavy metal grandeur. Tracks like Beyond The Shadow Of Doubt and Lost Soul showcase the band’s ability to craft epic, atmospheric soundscapes that are both crushing and melodic. The inclusion of Moog synthesizer by Sanford Parker and steel guitar by Alex Johnson adds layers of texture, deepening the doom-laden atmosphere without cluttering the mix. Wagner’s influence is ever-present, particularly on the track Heaven, where his vocals linger like a ghost in the machine. This is not merely a tribute album; it is a living, breathing entity that honors the past while charting its own course. Legions of Doom proves that the spirit of doom metal is alive and well, driven by musicians who have lived and breathed the genre for decades. It is a powerful, emotional journey that demands to be heard, offering a poignant yet uplifting experience for fans of classic heavy and doom metal.
