Background information about 'Let There Be Witchery'

Let There Be Witchery is Midnight doing what Midnight does best: dragging blackened speed metal through a gutter of sleaze, punk filth and pure, unrepentant fun. Athenar has never pretended to be anything other than a one-man wrecking crew with a taste for cheap beer, cheaper riffs and lyrics that would make a church group faint, and this record is that ethos distilled into its most gleefully nasty form. The guitars are raw and razored, the drums snap like a broken wrist, and the vocals snarl from somewhere deep in the red. It is ugly in the best possible way, and it never once apologizes for it.

What makes this one stick is the songwriting. Beneath the layers of grime there are hooks — real, sticky, hum-them-in-the-shower hooks — and that is the trick Midnight has always pulled off better than the legions of imitators who followed. Tracks barrel forward with the momentum of a bar fight, then slam on the brakes for a filthy groove that lands like a boot to the teeth. There is a sense of humor running through the whole thing, a wink that says yes, this is ridiculous, and yes, we are having a great time. Play it loud, play it late, and let the neighbors wonder what happened to you.
