There are bands that play it safe, and then there is Midnight — the Cleveland one-man wrecking crew that treats rock 'n' roll like a dirty little secret worth shouting from the rooftops. "Satanic Royalty" is exactly what the title promises: sleazy, hook-stuffed, and gleefully unrepentant, a record that sounds like a basement tape made by people who grew up on Motörhead, Venom and early punk 45s, then decided to turn everything up two notches past reasonable.
What makes this thing so addictive is how shamelessly it wears its influences while still landing like a fist to the jaw. The riffs are simple, the choruses are even simpler, and that is precisely the point — every track here is built to be yelled back at a sweaty club show. There is a filthy swagger running through the whole thing, a sense that nobody involved cared about polish, only about attitude, volume and a good time. It is blackened speed metal with a grin on its face and a bottle in its hand, and it never once pretends to be anything else.
