There are albums that feel like unearthed relics, treasures buried deep in the frost that somehow found their way back into the light. Mithotyn's King of the Distant Forest is exactly that — a bona fide gem of late 90s Scandinavian metal that has been dusted off, remastered, and given the vinyl treatment it always deserved. Originally released in 1998, this is the sophomore full-length from the Swedish outfit, recorded just a year after their debut In the Sign of the Ravens, and it hits with the force of a band that knew exactly what they wanted to say.

What strikes you immediately is how effortlessly Mithotyn blend the frostbitten aggression of black metal with the melodic warmth of folk music. The riffs are sharp, fast, and ridiculously catchy — there's a reason this record has gathered a cult following over the years. Vocalist Stefan "Stefan" Weinerhall (yes, the same guy who later formed Falconer) delivers those high-pitched shrieks and growls that sit perfectly between raw black metal and something more... epic. Tracks like \u201cWe March\u201d and \u201cThe Vengeance\u201d are pure battle anthems, while the instrumental closer In a Time of Tales shows a surprising melodic sensitivity. This reissue comes with brand new artwork by Kris Verwimp and has been lovingly remastered. First time on vinyl. Absolutely essential.
