Background information about 'Zau'
Some albums arrive as a farewell, and "Zău" carries the weight of one. Negură Bunget had already lost drummer and creative heart Gabriel "Negru" Mafa to a heart attack in March 2017, yet his drum tracks were luckily already in the can before the final tour. The surviving line-up gathered every sketch, demo and rehearsal tape and finished the record with the same devotion they would have shown the man himself. What came out of that labour of love is the closing chapter of the "Transylvanian trilogy", and it closes nothing so much as a whole era.
The music moves like the Banat landscape it was written for: fragile, quiet passages suddenly give way to furious outbreaks, black and dark pagan metal melt into the rich musical heritage of Romania. There are epic, almost cinematic textures here, then a hush, then another storm. Compared to the lush expanses of "Zi", this one steps back into blacker, harsher territory, and every strand of the band's long evolution finally pulls together. It is not a summary of the parts, it is something bigger, a testament left behind with care by people who refused to let a vision slip into silence. Deeply moving, and absolutely essential.
