"Sempiternal Past" serves as an incredible archaeological dig through Darkthrone's formative years, compiling their earliest demos and rare recordings from 1988 to 1999. This collection captures the Norwegian legends during their transition from death metal to the black metal sound that would define them. The "Land Of Frost" demo from 1988 showcases their raw, unpolished beginnings with tracks like "Forest Of Darkness" and "Day Of The Dead" revealing the band's early fascination with dark atmospherics and brutal riffing.

The compilation gets even more fascinating with the inclusion of the "Thulcandra" and "Cromlech" demos from 1989, featuring the epic "Sempiternal Past / Presence View Sepulchrality" that gives the album its title. The rare TV performance from Norway in 1989 provides a glimpse into their live energy during this crucial period, while the 1999 studio recording "God Of Disturbance And Friction" shows how their sound evolved over the decade.
