Background information about 'Zau'
Some albums arrive as documents rather than records, and "Zău" is one of them. The final chapter of Negură Bunget's "Transylvanian trilogy" was left hanging when drummer and creative force Gabriel "Negru" Mafa passed away in March 2017 — yet his drum tracks were already in the can, and the remaining musicians gathered every sketch, demo and rehearsal tape to finish what he had started. You can hear that devotion in every bar. The black and dark pagan metal foundation is completely woven through with Romania's own musical heritage: rich textures, wide cinematic passages, fragile quiet stretches that suddenly give way to furious outbreaks. It breathes like the landscape it describes, shifting with the seasons of Banat and Transylvania, carrying old legends into the room with you.
What makes "Zău" so moving is how unforced it all feels. Nothing here sounds like a monument being erected — it sounds like a band finishing a sentence they had to finish. The harsher, blacker direction of this last part of the trilogy pulls the earlier records into focus, and the closing statement lands with real weight. It is a swansong in the truest sense: grief and craft and stubborn love for an idea, all pressed into one record.
