Five years after their debut "Summoning Hell", German duo Nocturnal Witch unleashed "A Thousand Pyres" in 2019, taking the next logical evolutionary step with more refined arrangements and a broader palette of influences that notably didn't dilute their established stylistic direction. You could safely call it straightforward blackened thrash metal, even though the Thuringian band might not agree with such categorizations. As vocalist/guitarist Tyrant and drummer Baphomet believe, "Such categorizations are usually made by others. We ourselves don't think in such patterns when writing songs. We just make the music we feel like making and that comes naturally."

For "A Thousand Pyres", this meant a more melodic approach on tracks like the title cut and "Scorn and Wrath", plus choruses that were even more memorable than those on the predecessor album, particularly on "Dark Forces". With their experience from previous sessions and other bands, the two musicians crafted an album without filler material, featuring an authentically raw yet nuanced sound from their own rehearsal space Black Magic Studios, where they recorded with mobile equipment from Patrick W. Engel of Temple of Disharmony, who ultimately mixed and mastered the material.
