Background information about 'I Trollskogens Drömmande Mörker'
I Trollskogens Drömmande Mörker is the sound of a folklore tale being told around a fire that never quite goes out. Otyg deal in Viking metal with a folk heart, and this record leans hard into the old ways without ever feeling like a museum piece. Fiddles and flutes trade lines with distorted guitars, while the vocals shift from a gruff storyteller growl to something almost hymnal. It is theatrical, yes, but it earns its drama: the melodies are genuinely strong, and the arrangements have room to breathe instead of piling on every instrument in the room.
What makes this one stick is the mood. It never settles for cheap bombast. Instead, it builds tension, lets a melody circle back, then knocks you sideways with a riff that sounds like it was carved out of a northern winter. There is something deeply satisfying about a band that treats folk tradition as living material rather than decoration, and Otyg do exactly that. If you like your metal with roots showing and a story to tell, this is a record that rewards repeated spins.
