Background information about 'I Trollskogens Drömmande Mörker'

There is something wonderfully strange about hearing a band find its own voice in real time, and "I Trollskogens Drömmande Mörker" captures exactly that moment for Otyg. These are the demo recordings that pushed the Swedish folk metal pioneers one decisive step deeper into their own mythology — a world of troll-haunted forests, frost-bound mountains and rituals half-remembered from old songs. Compared to the earlier "Bertagen", everything here hits harder and moves faster: the riffs bite, the melodies cut sharper, and the arrangements dare more without ever abandoning the earthy, organic folk pulse that makes this band so distinctive.

What really lifts this material is the way violin and female vocals are woven straight into the fabric of the songs rather than draped over the top. They breathe with the guitars, adding shadow and warmth, texture and mystery. The track "Norrut" alone shows how imaginative and technically gifted Otyg already were, while the closing numbers deliberately slow the pace and settle into something almost ceremonial, leaving a strange, lingering chill behind. Remastered in 2025 by Vintersorg from the original tapes, this re-issue wisely keeps the raw, untamed edge of the demos intact while finally granting them the clarity they always deserved. A genuine treasure for anyone who loves folk metal with dirt under its fingernails.
