Background information about 'Lords of Hypocrisy'
Some records simply refuse to age, and "Lords of Hypocrisy" is one of them. Pagan Altar wrote these songs between 1976 and 1983, long before anyone had a name for what they were doing, and the decades since have only sharpened the blade. This is macabre heavy/doom metal in its purest form: slow, ceremonial riffs that drag themselves forward like a funeral procession, a vocalist who sounds like he has seen things the rest of us are better off not knowing, and an atmosphere thick enough to cut with a knife. The whole thing circles around one grim theme, man's inhumanity to man and the inevitable reckoning that follows, and it never once lets you off the hook.
What makes this reissue so welcome is that it keeps a genuine cult artefact in circulation. Based on the long out-of-print editions from the now defunct Temple of Mystery Records, this pressing brings the album back to shelves where it belongs, and the songs hold up beautifully. There is a hypnotic quality to the pacing here, a willingness to let a riff breathe and repeat until it becomes something closer to a ritual than a chorus. Doom this early and this confident is a rare thing, and hearing it again is like finding a lost relic in your own basement.
