Background information about 'Consuming Impulse (Re-Release 2023)'

Some records don't just age well — they set the bar and then dare everyone else to clear it. "Consuming Impulse" is one of those, and hearing it again in this remastered shape is like watching a favorite old photograph suddenly come into razor-sharp focus. Pestilence were never interested in being polite. From the moment "Dehydrated" kicks in, the Dutch quartet drags you through a filthy, riff-dense labyrinth where Martin van Drunen's throat-shredding bark sounds less like singing and more like a man fighting his way out of something. The rhythm section is relentless, the guitars buzz and gnarl, and nothing here sits still long enough to get comfortable.

What makes this album such a landmark is how it refuses to pick a lane. It's death metal, sure, but there's thrash grit, a grim sense of melody creeping under the surface, and a structural ambition that hints at where extreme music would head in the following decades. "The Process of Suffocation" and "Chronic Infection" are pure kinetic fury, while "Out of the Body" slows things down just enough to let the dread settle in. The remaster doesn't sand off any of the rough edges — it just makes the whole thing hit harder and clearer, which is exactly what you want.

Thirty-plus years on, this still sounds hungry, ugly and thrilling in all the right ways. A cornerstone of European death metal, back where it belongs.
