Background information about 'Tchornobog'

Some albums don't just play — they open a door and let the weather in. "Tchornobog" is exactly that kind of record: the debut full-length from Tchornobog, the solo vessel of Ukrainian-born, Portland-based Markov Soroka, who also conjures Aureole and Drown. Eight years of writing and shaping went into this thing, and you can hear every one of them in the way the songs refuse to sit still. Death metal is the skeleton, black metal is the atmosphere, but there's jazz creeping through the corners, piano drifting in like fog through a broken window, and a whole inner world of nightmares pushing at the seams.

The name means "black god" in Ukrainian, a Slavic figure tied to darkness, death and evil — but Soroka doesn't bow to it. He uses it as a lens, staring at the chaos of the earth and at his own headspace, and the result is surreal, suffocating and strangely beautiful. The riffs don't so much attack as boil, bubbling in their own misery until nothing is left but smoke, as one early review put it. What makes it stick is the ambition: this is one person building cathedrals of dread and then knocking them down again, track by track, with total control.

It landed in 2017 and immediately left a mark on the underground, and this Lupus Lounge reissue keeps that fire burning. If you like your extreme music thoughtful, unhinged and genuinely cinematic, this is a record that rewards every late-night listen.
