Background information about 'Tchornobog'
There are debut albums that announce a band, and then there are debut albums that swallow the room whole. Tchornobog's self-titled statement is firmly in the second camp: four tracks, each one long enough to be its own weather system, built from death metal's low-end crush, black metal's freezing wind and a doom-paced patience that borders on the ritualistic. Nothing here hurries. Riffs are dragged out until they warp, then released into passages of queasy melody that feel like the ground shifting under your feet.
The real thrill is how deliberately the whole thing breathes. Greg Chandler's additional vocals add a second, stranger layer of dread, while Lillian Liu's piano and Sofia Hedman's saxophone arrive like uninvited guests at a funeral, gorgeous and deeply wrong in the best possible way. "The Vomiting Tchornobog (Slithering Gods Of Cognitive Dissonance)" sprawls past the twenty-minute mark without ever losing its grip, and by the time "Here, At The Disposition Of Time (Inverting A Solar Giant)" closes the record, you feel like you have been somewhere, not just played something. This is music made by people who trust atmosphere more than hooks, and it pays off in every suffocating, luminous minute.
