THULCANDRA · Ascension Lost | WHITE BLACK BLUE MARBLED 2LP

White, blue and black marbled double vinyl in gatefold sleeve. Limited to 300 copies.

Background information about 'Ascension Lost'

There is a very specific kind of cold that only Munich can produce, and Thulcandra have been bottling it since their debut. "Ascension Lost", their third full-length, is the sound of that frost spreading — darkly majestic riffing wrapped in atmospheric lead guitars, all of it driven forward by drums that never quite let you breathe. Steffen Kummerer's screams sit enthroned above the storm, that instantly recognizable rasp carrying dark, threatening texts through a genuinely thrilling atmosphere. It is melodic black metal with a melancholic streak a mile wide, and it refuses to choose between beauty and brutality.

What makes this record tick is its sense of scale. Tracks like the opening pair build patiently before the blastbeats arrive, and when they do, the melodic lines underneath keep everything strangely elegant. There is a real craft here in the way the band layers tremolo-picked grandeur against frantic percussion — nothing feels bolted on, everything serves the mood. The bonus material closing out the second half adds a welcome extra dimension, giving the whole thing a sense of a band stretching its wings rather than simply repeating a winning formula.

This edition arrives as a white, blue and black marbled double LP housed in a gatefold cover, limited to 300 copies. For anyone who has followed this band since "Fallen Angel's Dominion", that is a pretty compelling package.
