Background information about 'XIII: Sárga Erdő'

Tamás Kátai has been steering Thy Catafalque since 1998, and thirteen albums deep he still refuses to repeat himself. "XIII: Sárga Erdő" arrives without a single narrative thread holding it together — twelve pieces that drift across old ground, circling loss, distance, memory and plain disappearance, never quite landing on one story. That restlessness is exactly what makes it so gripping.

The big shift here is rhythmic: for the first time in the project's history a live drummer sits in the chair instead of programmed beats, and you feel the difference in every breath the songs take. The cast is still absurdly large — thirty-four musicians plus a twenty-voice male choir — but the folk and classical colours that once smothered every corner (piano, strings, brass, reed, sitar, kamancheh, zither) are now rationed with real discipline, summoned only when a track genuinely needs them. Closer to the bone than the maximalism of its predecessor, heavier in restraint than in volume, it still finds room for a fictitious folk song written for a vanished people on the Volga, an incineration metaphor turned into the album's most punishing cut, and an opener that reads like a farewell letter. Gábor Vári returns behind the desk for a second record running, keeping the production language steady while the arrangements pull back. Cover photography by Laszlo Horvath.
