Background information about 'XIII: Sárga Erdo'

Tamás Kátai has been building this thing since 1998, quietly, stubbornly, and now with two Hungarian Grammys on the shelf. "XIII: Sárga Erdo" is the thirteenth Thy Catafalque record, and it does something the previous ones never did: it lets go of the thread. No single story runs through these twelve pieces. Instead you get something that feels like walking old ground at dusk, brushing past loss, distance, memory, disappearance, never quite settling on one of them.

The real headline here is rhythm. For the first time, Thy Catafalque uses a live drummer instead of programmed beats, and you feel the difference immediately in how the songs breathe. The cast is absurd, thirty-four musicians plus a twenty-voice male choir, yet the folk and classical colours that used to flood every corner, piano, strings, brass, reed, sitar, kamancheh, zither, arrive only when a track actually asks for them. That restraint is the point. This is heavier in what it withholds than in how loud it gets. There is a fictitious folk song written for a vanished people on the Volga, an incineration metaphor that turns into the album's most punishing cut, and an opener that reads like a farewell letter. Gábor Vári returns behind the desk for a second run, keeping the production language steady while the arrangements pull back. Cover photography by Laszlo Horvath.
