Background information about 'The Grand Annihilation'
There are albums that merely exist in your collection, and then there are those that grab you by the throat from the first note and refuse to let go. TOMBS' "The Grand Annihilation" is very much the latter. This is black metal that has crawled through the swamps of post-punk, crawled out the other side covered in crust-punk filth and come back swinging with a sound that is as intellectually devastating as it is physically punishing.
The album doesn't waste a second. From the opening riff of "Black Sun Horizon", Mike Hill and co. establish a landscape that is both desolate and strangely beautiful. The production is raw enough to keep the edges jagged, but clear enough that every twisted riff and every haunted howl cuts through like a blade. Tracks like "Cold" and "Old Wounds" showcase the band's uncanny ability to shift from blast-beat fury into cavernous, doom-laden passages without ever losing momentum. "November Wolves" is a standout, with its hypnotic repetition building into a cathartic wall of noise that feels almost ritualistic.
What sets "The Grand Annihilation" apart is its refusal to stay in one lane. The shadow of post-punk and gothic rock looms large over tracks like "Shadows At The End Of The World" and "Walk With Me In Nightmares", where clean guitars and brooding atmospheres intertwine with the relentless aggression. The closing duo of "Saturnalian" and "Temple Of Mars" drives the point home with a hammer: this is black metal that thinks, that feels, that evolves. It's a record that rewards repeat listens, revealing new layers of sonic decay with every spin.
