Background information about 'Age of Aquarius'
There are records that feel like they were pulled straight from the earth, and Age of Aquarius by Villagers of Ioannina City is exactly that kind of beast. Hailing from the rugged mountains of Epirus in northwestern Greece, this band has carved out a sound that is completely their own - heavy, psychedelic rock that breathes with the raw spirit of nature itself. Their sophomore album, originally unleashed in September 2019 and now reissued by Napalm Records, is a sprawling, hypnotic journey that pulls you deep into their world of mammoth riffs and cosmic wonder.
What sets Villagers of Ioannina City apart is their fearless use of folk instrumentation woven into the fabric of heavy rock. Bagpipes, flutes and didgeridoos snake through the thunderous guitar work, creating a soundscape that feels ancient and futuristic all at once. Tracks like Age of Aquarius and Part V build with patient, meditative intensity, while Father Sun and Cosmic Soul hit with a groove that locks in and refuses to let go. The band's deep connection to Greek nature and cosmic phenomena bleeds through every note - this is music that feels elemental, rooted in the landscape that birthed it. Epirus may just be the unlikely epicentre of the heavy rock universe, and this record is the mantra for a new age.
