Background information about 'Into Cold Darkness'
When Vital Remains dropped "Into Cold Darkness" in 1995, they weren't asking for permission. They were kicking the door in. This is death metal with a cathedral-sized sense of dread, built on riffs that grind like machinery and then suddenly open into something almost majestic. The Rhode Island crew had already made noise with their debut, but here they sharpened everything: the guitar tone is filthy and thick, the drums hit like collapsing masonry, and the vocals sit somewhere between a sermon and a threat. It is the sound of a band that worships the old school but refuses to be trapped by it.
What makes this record stick is the songwriting. Tracks like the title cut and "Crown Of The Black Hearts" don't just bludgeon — they build, layer, and release, dragging you through tempo shifts that feel genuinely dangerous. There's a grim theatricality to it all, a sense that these songs were written in a cold room with candles burning. The production keeps the grit intact instead of sanding it down, which is exactly how this stuff should sound. Decades on, it still holds up as one of the fiercer statements to come out of the American death metal underground, and hearing it on wax is the way it was meant to be experienced.
