Death Riff Society is exactly what its name promises: a record built on riffs the size of highway overpasses, played by a band that clearly grew up worshipping the loudest corners of the metal record shop. Viu Drakh don't waste a second on mood-setting intros here. They kick the door in with the title track and keep the pressure on, trading thrashy gallop for chunky mid-tempo stomp and back again, all of it glued together by a rhythm section that sounds like it's having the time of its life.
What makes the album such a good time is the band's sense of humour and history. They're not precious about genre borders. There's a swaggering, almost rock 'n' roll looseness in places, a couple of covers that will make long-time heads grin, and a closer that turns a beloved anthem into a full-on metal brawl. The production keeps things raw and punchy rather than polished to death, which suits songs this direct. It's the sound of a band playing for the cheap seats and the front row at the same time. If you like your metal greasy, fun and riff-obsessed, this one earns its place in the rack.
