Howl From Underground is the sound of a band that never needed a map to find the darkest corner of the room. Wolfbrigade have been hammering out Scandinavian d-beat since the mid-nineties, and this record finds them in viciously fine form — all buzzsaw guitars, runaway basslines and drums that feel like a collapsing tunnel. There is no fat here, no filler, no polite intro that lets you catch your breath. Just riff after riff, delivered with the kind of ragged precision that only comes from decades of playing together in cramped rehearsal rooms and even more cramped vans.
What makes this one stick is the songwriting. The Swedes know exactly when to slam on the brakes and let a grim, melodic lead line hang in the air before the next charge. It is crust punk with a real sense of drama, and the production keeps everything raw enough to bruise but clear enough that you can hear every string bend and every barked vocal. Play it loud and it feels less like a record and more like a warning siren going off somewhere in the distance, getting closer with every track.
