Black Ice vinyl in standard cover.

Background information about '2005 Demo'

Before the cascading walls of sound, before the eco-spiritual manifestos, before the Pacific Northwest black metal renaissance was even a whisper — there was this: the 2005 Demo from Wolves in the Throne Room, a raw, feral document of three souls finding their voice in the damp forests of Olympia, Washington. This isn't the polished, atmospheric grandeur of Two Hunters or Celestial Lineage. No, this is something far more primal, far more dangerous. Recorded in the band's earliest incarnation, these four tracks capture the Weaver brothers and company at their most unvarnished — a seething, hungry black metal beast clawing its way out of the Cascadian wilderness.

What strikes you immediately is how much of the band's DNA is already fully formed here. The trance-inducing repetition, the almost ritualistic devotion to atmosphere over technical showmanship, the way riffs spiral and cascade like branches swaying in a winter storm — it's all present, just drenched in a lo-fi murk that makes it feel like you've unearthed some forbidden relic from a forgotten era. The demo buzzes with that impossible-to-fake energy of a young band that knows exactly what it wants to say but hasn't yet learned how to say it politely. And thank the old gods for that — because this is black metal that actually feels dangerous, that actually transports you somewhere beyond the mundane. The guitars howl, the drums pound with desperate urgency, and the vocals sound less like a human performance and more like the forest itself screaming through a human vessel. For anyone who's followed Wolves' journey from underground cult to one of the most respected names in atmospheric black metal, this demo is nothing short of essential archaeology — the moment the seed cracked open and the roots began to spread.
