Some records don't get reissued so much as they get exhumed, and "Marrow of the Spirit" is exactly that kind of beast. Agalloch always insisted this one was meant to sound like a black metal record cut in 1970 — vintage tubes instead of digital amp sims, loose and physical performances instead of click-track perfection, a cello intro that detonates into the most ferocious blast beats the band ever committed to tape. The songs were there. The vision was there. The mix, by the band's own admission, was not, and for fifteen years that nagging gap sat between what they heard in their heads and what we heard on our speakers.

Enter Markus Stock, whose productions had long been the reference point for the depth and cohesion Agalloch were chasing. He went back to Steven Wray Lobdell's original 2010 recordings, mixed at Klangschmiede Studio E, and handed the results to Gus Elg for a fresh master. What surfaces now is not a rewrite and not an erasure — it's an excavation. Buried counterlines step forward. The guitars breathe where they used to smother. "Black Lake Niðstång" and "Into the Painted Grey" gain a physical weight that the old mix only hinted at, while the album's cinematic sprawl stays every bit as untamed and esoteric as it was on day one.

This is the rare remix that respects your first impression while quietly proving it was incomplete. Bleak, elemental, restless — and finally heard the way it was imagined.
