Background information about 'The Bleeding'

If there's a single album that turned death metal from an underground obsession into a full-blown monster, it's Cannibal Corpse's The Bleeding. Released in 1994, this record didn't just define a band at its absolute peak of confidence — it announced to the world that brutal music could be catchy, groovy, and terrifying all at once. This is where Chris Barnes delivered his final studio performance with the band, and he went out swinging, his guttural growls somehow both more intelligible and more menacing than ever before.

What makes The Bleeding so special is the way it balances raw technicality with an almost swaggering sense of groove. Tracks like "Stripped, Raped and Strangled" and "Fucked with a Knife" are relentless, but underneath all the savagery there's a precision and memorability that most death metal of the era simply couldn't touch. The riffs from Jack Owen and Rob Barrett lock in with Alex Webster's bass in a way that feels almost surgical, while Paul Mazurkiewicz's drumming drives everything forward with terrifying momentum. This is the sound of a band that understood exactly how to make extremity stick in your head.

And then there's the artwork. Vincent Locke's cover painting is the stuff of legend — grotesque, nightmarish, and unforgettable. Having it pressed directly onto a picture disc is a collector's dream, letting that iconic image spin right along with the music. For anyone who cares about the history of death metal, this is essential: the album that proved brutality could be commercially successful without ever compromising an ounce of its savagery.
