Background information about 'Grin'
Some records don't just sit in a genre, they quietly bend it out of shape. "Grin" is exactly that kind of record. Coroner came out of Switzerland in the late eighties as a thrash band, but by the time this album landed in 1993 they had already left the straight-ahead playbook far behind. What you get here is technical, restless, strangely elegant music — riffs that twist like staircases that shouldn't exist, bass lines that walk their own path, and drumming that keeps shifting the floor beneath you. It's heavy, sure, but it's heavy the way a cathedral is heavy: full of space, detail and cold beauty.
The band's secret weapon has always been restraint. Nothing here is played just to show off. "The Lethargic Age" builds its tension slowly, "Serpent Moves" coils and uncoils with a hypnotic groove, and the instrumental pieces "Dream Path" and "Theme For Silence" act like breath marks between the storms. Ron Royce's bass is a lead voice in its own right, Tommy T. Baron's guitar work is surgical, and Marquis Marky's drumming is pure architecture. Add the odd didgeridoo, a guest female voice and spoken word, and you've got an album that refuses to be just one thing. Thirty-plus years on, it still sounds like nobody else's record.
