Background information about 'Lonely People With Power'

Deafheaven have never been a band content to sit still, and "Lonely People With Power" finds the San Francisco outfit pushing their sound somewhere new yet again. The blackgaze fury that once defined them is still smoldering underneath, but here it's filtered through something stranger and more colourful — shimmering guitar textures, wide-open melodic passages and a sense of drama that feels closer to a widescreen art-rock record than a straight metal assault. Deafheaven sound genuinely thrilled to be exploring this territory, and that excitement is contagious from the first seconds of the brief, haunting opener onward.

The record's real strength is its pacing. Tracks like "Doberman" and "Amethyst" stretch out into long, hypnotic builds before erupting, while shorter pieces such as "Magnolia" and the gorgeous "Body Behavior" prove the band can land a knockout in under six minutes. The three "Incidental" interludes act as connective tissue, and the guest spots — Jae Matthews on "Incidental II" and Paul Banks on "Incidental III" — add unexpected colours without ever feeling like stunts. There's real emotional weight in "Winona" and the closing "The Marvelous Orange Tree", a finale that lingers long after the last note fades.

This is a band operating at the height of their powers, unafraid to be beautiful one moment and crushing the next. For anyone who has followed them from the early days, it's a rewarding next chapter; for newcomers, it's as good a place as any to fall in love.
