There are records that simply refuse to age, and Destruction's Cracked Brain is one of those stubborn beasts. Released in 1990, this is the sound of a band at the crossroads, and yet somehow they managed to bottle lightning one more time. This is thrash metal with that unmistakable German precision, but there's a groove here that sneaks up on you, a swagger that most of their peers never quite managed to nail. The title track alone is worth the price of admission, a relentless chug that buries itself in your skull and refuses to leave.

What makes Cracked Brain so special is how it balances raw aggression with actual songwriting craft. The riffs are sharp as a guillotine, the drumming is a machine-gun barrage, and Schmier's replacement on this outing, André Grieder, brings a snarling, punk-inflected energy that gives the whole thing a different, wilder flavor. Tracks like "No Need to Justify" and "Time Must End" hit with the force of a runaway freight train, while the production keeps everything gloriously rough around the edges. This is the kind of album that sounds best cranked to eleven on a proper turntable.
