About the album

With their sophomore album, "Wormwood" ("Палын"), DYMNA LOTVA revisits the haunting themes of Chernobyl in 2017. The duo's initial track, 'A Solitary Human Voice' ('Самотны Чалавечы Голас'), is rooted in the poignant words of Lyudmila Ignatenko, widow of a Chernobyl liquidator, whose story also inspired the HBO series "Chernobyl." Musically, "Wormwood" serves as both a continuation and an expansion of their debut album "The Land Under the Black Wings: Swamp" ("Зямля пад чорнымі крыламі: Дрыгва") from 2016, which fused Nordic Black Metal with Slavic elements. Lyrically distinct from the trilogy that DYMNA LOTVA began with their debut—focused on historical events and legends from their Belarusian homeland—the album frequently references classic Belarusian literature. The creative spark for composer Jauhien Charkasau and vocalist Katsiaryna "Nokt Aeon" Mankevich was ignited upon hearing that Belarusian author Svetlana Alexievich had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, leading them to compose their first song on that very day.

Following the release of "Wormwood," both founding members fled Belarus due to political persecution and censorship under the Lukashenko regime. The trilogy was later completed with their third album "The Land Under the Black Wings" ("Зямля Пад Чорнымі Крыламі: Кроў"), broadening their musical scope towards Doom and more traditional tones while still rooted in Nordic Black Metal. The band's name, DYMNA LOTVA, translates to "Swamp in Smoke," referencing the harrowing events surrounding the burnt villages of Polesie—a marshland along the Pripyat River now divided among four countries.
