There are records that creep up on you, and then there's Verbolgen – the kind that grabs you by the throat from the first spin and doesn't let go. Hulder has always operated in the shadows, but this third full-length is something else entirely. It's the sound of a project shedding its skin and emerging as something far more dangerous, far more majestic.
What strikes you first is the sheer atmosphere. From the opening incantation of Drie Raven to the devastating closer The Glow of Dawn, this album breathes an ancient, frostbitten air. The songwriting has expanded in every direction – hurdy gurdy and keys weave through the blackened fury like ritualistic chants, while Ianuaria's flute passages drift through the mix like mist over a forgotten battlefield. The two-drummer approach (Vapula and Vrolok splitting duties) gives the rhythm section a dynamic, almost schizophrenic energy that keeps you guessing. And Ahti Kortelainen's production at Tico Tico Studio? Pure earth and fire. Raw enough to feel dangerous, clear enough to let every细节 breathe.
Three tracks sung in Flemish add an incantatory, otherworldly dimension that sets Verbolgen apart from anything in the Hulder discography. This is black metal that worships at the altar of nature, ancestry, and the old ways – without ever sounding like a museum piece. It's alive, it's hungry, and it's absolutely essential.
