Background information about 'Verbolgen'

There are albums that creep up on you, and then there's "Verbolgen" — a record that grabs you by the throat from the very first note and doesn't let go until the dying embers of its closing track. HULDER, the dark black metal project from the United States, has always traded in a particular kind of wintry severity, but this fourth full-length marks a genuine evolution. With Necreon stepping fully into his role as co-leader rather than session contributor, the duo has crafted something that feels both ancient and freshly conjured.

The nine tracks on "Verbolgen" move through a landscape of ancestral rite and pre-Christian shadow, where hurdy gurdy and additional keys from Keld bring processional weight, and Ianuaria's session flute drifts like smoke across still water. Two drummers — Vapula and Vrolok — split duties, each bringing distinct character to the rhythm section, making the album feel alive to every shift in mood and tempo. Mixed by Ahti Kortelainen at Tico Tico Studio in Finland, the sound is earthy, resonant, and perfectly suited to themes of blood, soil, and old debts. Three songs are sung in Flemish, lending the record an incantatory dimension unlike anything in HULDER's back catalogue. Even the cover art signals a new chapter: painted by Morrigan, it's her first work for a metal band in nearly three decades.
