Background information about 'Telemark'
Five tracks, zero fat. On "Telemark", Ihsahn steps away from the symphonic excess of his full-length records and lets the raw Norwegian landscape do the talking. The opening "Stridig" barrels forward with a riff that feels carved out of granite, all frost and forward motion, before "Nord" pulls the tempo back into a cold, hypnotic groove that could soundtrack a midnight drive through a fjord. The title track is the centrepiece: a brooding, blackened epic that keeps threatening to explode and then does exactly that in its final minutes. And then there is the curveball — a cover of "Rock And Roll Is Dead", twisted into something far darker than the original ever dared to be. Add a take on Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild" and you have an EP that is as much a love letter to heavy music's past as it is a statement of where Ihsahn stands right now.
What makes this release so satisfying is how unforced it all sounds. There is no filler, no padding, no attempt to stretch an idea past its natural life. Every riff earns its place, every keyboard swell sits exactly where it should, and the production keeps the grit intact instead of polishing it into oblivion. It is the sound of a veteran musician having genuine fun with the format, and that energy is contagious.
