Indiana's true doom metal legends are back, and man, does it feel good to have them around again. After more than a decade since their last full-length The Wretch, The Gates of Slumber return with a self-titled sixth album that hits like a sledgehammer wrapped in concrete. Karl Simon resurrected the beast in 2019 for Hell Over Hammaburg, and what started as a reunion quickly turned into something far more vital — new songs began pouring out, and the result is nothing short of devastating.
From the opening crush of Embrace the Lie to the John Carpenter-inspired chills of The Fog, this record is pure, unapologetic doom metal worship. The riffs are colossal, the tempos swing between funeral-march slow and headbanging fury, and Simon's vocals carry that world-weary gravitas that only comes from someone who has lived through the darkness. Tracks like We Are Perdition and Full Moon Fever channel the spirit of Saint Vitus and Penance with a raw, honest energy that never feels like mere imitation. There is a weight to these songs — not just sonically, but emotionally. The shadow of late bassist Jason McCash looms large, and you can feel that loss woven into every note. This is doom metal as confession, as catharsis, as survival.
