For well over a decade, this New York-based quartet has been the gold standard for American avant-garde black metal — a band that continuously pushes boundaries while staying fiercely loyal to their hyper-technical, riff-drenched roots. And now, with Scour Order, they've done it again.
The album is a masterclass in controlled chaos. From the moment the opening track kicks in, you're hit with those signature intertwining guitars — Mick Barr and Colin Marston weaving labyrinthine melodies that sound like they're constantly on the verge of collapsing, yet somehow hold together with surgical precision. Lev Weinstein's drumming is, as always, an absolute beast: blasting, shifting, and grooving in ways that shouldn't work but absolutely do. And underneath it all, the bass work by Marston gives the whole thing a dense, almost psychedelic low-end rumble.
What sets Scour Order apart is how it balances the band's trademark intensity with moments of genuine atmospheric depth. There are passages here that feel almost meditative before the storm hits again. It's not just aggression for aggression's sake — it's thoughtful, layered, and rewards repeated listens. The production is crisp but organic, letting every instrument breathe without losing that raw edge.
