Background information about 'Still Life'
Opeth returns with a stunning reissue of their progressive death metal masterpiece "Still Life", an album that stands as one of the most compelling concept records in extreme music history. This 1999 opus weaves a dark tale of love, betrayal, and religious persecution through seven interconnected compositions that showcase the Swedish masters at their most ambitious and emotionally devastating.
From the haunting opening passages of "The Moor" to the epic finale of "White Cluster", Opeth demonstrates their unparalleled ability to seamlessly blend crushing death metal brutality with moments of breathtaking acoustic beauty. Mikael Åkerfeldt's dual vocal approach—shifting effortlessly between demonic growls and clean, melancholic passages—creates an emotional landscape that few bands have ever matched. The intricate guitar work, featuring both Martin Mendez's thunderous bass lines and the dual guitar assault of Åkerfeldt and Peter Lindgren, builds atmospheric cathedrals of sound that collapse into devastating walls of progressive metal fury.
