Man, what a journey this is!Originally released in 2021, "...And Again into the Light" marked a profound new chapter for Panopticon. The album's sprawling compositions weave aggressive metal, Appalachian folk, and atmospheric textures into a deeply personal meditation on grief, renewal, and the human cost of industrialisation.Easily the darkest and heaviest record of his entire career.Austin Lunn really poured his soul into this one -its principal theme or message is "atoning for wrongdoings and failures, growing and changing, casting off darkness and returning to hope again… returning to and improving on a better version of myself".The opening track, which is the title track, is a country song, one that unfolds through acoustic guitar against a backdrop of quivering, gleaming fiddle tones and a moaning cello. Singing in deep subdued tones, Lunn also accompanies himself on steel guitar, but those shrill, searing tones periodically rise up, magnifying the intensity of this sad, mesmerizing song.A work of immense emotional depth, "...And Again into the Light" explores the turbulence of midlife, the consequences of past choices, and the longing for atonement – themes mirrored by the broader existential threat of ecological collapse. Across its eight tracks, Austin Lunn draws the listener through soaring clean vocals, raw fury, and haunting acoustic passages, forging a journey both harrowing and hopeful.Many of the songs reach crescendos of vast, panoramic sweep, but even in the most spectacular zeniths there's a darkness in the music, with feelings that seem like despair mingled with heart-breaking grief. The album may represent an effort to cast off darkness and return to hope again, but there's also a sense that the abyss is still there.Lauded as one of Panopticon's most powerful and cohesive statements, "...And Again into the Light" remains a landmark achievement – a soul-baring reflection wrapped in some of the most evocative and genre-defying extreme metal of its era.For fans of:
